Interlibrary Loan

If we don't have a particular item in our collection, oftentimes we can get it from a library that does. We call these types of transactions Interlibrary Loans or ILLs. You can request books or audiobooks via ILL.

To put in an ILL request, you can use the ILL form on this page. You may also call the library or stop in to place your request. You will need to provide at least the title and author of the item you're looking for.  Other fields like publisher and ISBN are optional, but the more info you provide, the more likely we'll be able to find just what you're looking for.

You can also decide whether you'd like us to look for the item outside the state of Indiana. We always check Indiana libraries for the item first, but sometimes going beyond state borders is the only way we can get rare items. There is no charge for ILL items that we get from in-state libraries; however, if we need to get an item from out-of-state, there is a $4 shipping charge. Saying that you're willing to pay the fee does not mean that you will necessarily have to pay it—we will try to get the item in-state first and only charge you if the item is not available from any Indiana libraries. You can feel free to answer either Yes or No to this question; we will do our best to find the item for you either way.

Sometimes we may not be able to find the item at a library in the area you've selected (either in-state or nationwide). We will let you know as soon as we find out if this is the case.

Once the item has been requested, we simply wait until it comes in. On average, an item will arrive in one to two weeks. However, on rare occasions a request can take a month or longer to come in, especially if it's coming from out of state. Be sure to take this potential timeframe into account when requesting items via ILL. If a request is taking even longer than that, let us know, and we will look into the situation.

When the item comes in, we will contact you to let you know it's here. If we had to get the item from out of state, you can pay the $4 fee when you come to check it out. Each lending library sets its own due dates for its items, so the date by which your ILL item must be returned to us may be different from the standard two week checkout.
